Sleep Series: Better Nights Ahead

Sleep Series: Treating Sleep Problems

Workshop Overview:

Is your child having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early? You are not alone, and more importantly, this is something that can be taught. Many parents believe children should simply know how to sleep, or that sleep problems will resolve on their own with time. In reality, sleep is a skill, just like brushing teeth, getting dressed, or tying shoes, and it can be taught using the same research based strategies used to teach any other skill.

This series walks you through a step by step process to identify your family’s specific sleep challenges and address them using gentle, individualized, evidence based strategies you can apply at home.

This series includes 6 courses:

  • Identifying Sleep Goals: Learn how to use a sleep journal to pinpoint exactly what’s affecting your child’s sleep and turn that information into clear, prioritized goals
  • Setting a Nighttime Routine: Build a consistent, calming routine that sets the foundation for better sleep at every age
  • Decreasing Sleep Dependencies: Learn which sleep habits are helpful to keep and how to gently shift away from the ones that may be holding your child back
  • Reducing Night Wakings: Use proven tools, including the bedtime pass, to help your child settle back to sleep on their own overnight
  • Reducing Early Morning Wakings: Help your child wake up at a more appropriate time using a morning routine and the okay to wake alarm
  • Maintaining Progress: Learn how to protect the progress you’ve made and keep your family’s new sleep skills going for the long term

Each course builds on the one before it, so you’ll come away with a complete, practical toolkit you can return to anytime sleep challenges come up, now or as your child grows.

Course Curriculum

Identifying Sleep Goals
Sleep struggles can affect the whole family, not just the child who isn't sleeping well. In this course, you'll learn how to start identifying what's really going on with your child's sleep using simple, practical tools you can use right away. We'll walk you through how to track sleep patterns with a sleep journal, spot trends over just a few nights, and turn what you find into clear, personalized goals for your family.

Setting a Nighttime Routine
Once you know what your child's sleep goals are, the next step is building the foundation that supports them: a consistent nighttime routine. In this course, you'll learn what makes a nighttime routine effective, how to build one that fits your child's age and your family's life, and how to use the bedtime fading technique to gradually move bedtime earlier without a struggle.

Decreasing Sleep Dependencies
Every child (and every adult) has sleep dependencies, the things they rely on to fall asleep and stay asleep. Some are perfectly fine to keep, while others, like needing a parent in the room all night, can make it hard for a child to fall back asleep on their own when they wake overnight. In this course, you'll learn how to tell the difference, and how to gently shift your child toward sleeping more independently using proven, step-by-step methods.

Reducing Night Wakings
If your child wakes up overnight and has trouble getting back to sleep on their own, this course will give you a set of clear, practical strategies to help. You'll learn three proven methods, including a tool called the bedtime pass, to help your child stay in bed and learn to settle back to sleep without needing you there every time.

Reducing Early Morning Wakings
If your child is waking up before it's actually time to start the day, often between 4:30 and 5:30 a.m., this course will help you address it with two practical tools: a consistent morning routine and an okay to wake alarm. You'll learn the difference between an early morning waking and a developmentally appropriate wake time, and how to gradually shift your child's wake up time to one that works better for your family.

Maintaining Progress
You've worked hard to help your child build better sleep skills, and this final course is all about protecting that progress for the long term. You'll learn how to keep using your sleep journal even after you've reached your goals, how to handle setbacks without losing the ground you've gained, and what to do if your child experiences skill regression down the road.
