A Systematic Review of The Matrix Training Literature

Featured Clinician: Ashley Kemmerer, Ph.D., BCBA-D

About This Study

This literature review examined how a teaching strategy called matrix training has been used to promote faster and more efficient learning. Matrix training is a generative teaching method designed to help learners acquire new skills and combinations of skills without direct instruction for every possible example.

Researchers reviewed 35 published studies that used matrix training to teach various skills and analyzed how the strategy was implemented, the types of learners involved, and the outcomes reported.

Results showed that matrix training can be an effective way to promote skill generalization and efficiency in instruction, while also highlighting differences in how the procedure is used across studies. The review also identifies areas where additional research could help strengthen and refine matrix training procedures.
